Interview with bantamweight UFC fighter Mike "The Hulk" Easton

I recently got the chance to catch up with UFC bantamweight fighter Mike "The Hulk" Easton. We discuss training, his plans for the future and how he got the nickname "The Hulk". Check it out...

Jay Cee:
"Hi Mike, great to have you on themmareview.co.uk. Firstly I have to start by talking about the injury that forced you to pull out of your scheduled fight against Yves Jabouin at UFC on Fuel TV 3. Tell me about how you felt when you knew you would be unable to compete?"

Mike Easton: "It always sucks not being able to compete, but it's part of the game. I'm already looking forward to getting back into the cage."

Jay Cee: "It will be great to see you back in the octagon again. Do you have any idea when we can expect you to return to action?"

Mike Easton: "That's up to my coach, Master Lloyd, and of course Dana White, Lorenzo and the guys. I'm ready when they're ready."

Jay Cee: "You had your debut with the UFC last October defeating Byron Bloodworth via TKO and in your second and most recent fight you defeated Jared Papazian via decision. Tell me what it feels like to be fighting on the big stage with the UFC? and what do you aim to accomplish within next few years?"

Mike Easton: "It feels incredible! It's a dream come true. Everyone knows that this is what I've been thinking of all my life, ever since I started martial arts. My plan is to go all the way to the top over the next few years. I'm aiming to be champ!"

Jay Cee: "What is your favorite part of training? Tell me about your fight camp/team...are there any rising stars other then yourself that we should be keeping an eye out for?"

Mike Easton: "Rolling and sparring are my favorite parts. Jiu Jitsu is always fun. Training is tough, its the fight that's the fun part. Yes, the guys I train with are Frank "The crank" Camacho, DJ Jackson, Ron Stallings, Tim Woods. All these guys are beasts, look out for them in the next few years."

Jay Cee: "Your nickname is "The Hulk"...what is the story behind that? Where did it come from?"

Mike Easton: "O' see I had an earlier fight, in Virginia, I forgot the dudes name, but I was taking him down, and when he hit the ground, I would pick him up and slam him back down, and I was dropping double hammer-fists. But I just kept picking up and slamming him, and from there the fans kept calling me the Hulk and it stuck. My son, Champ, loves it! He thinks I'm actually the Hulk. He tells kids at school I'm coming up in a movie."

Jay Cee: "Last question now Mike....Who is your favorite MMA fighter past or present? And why?"

Mike Easton: "I have a couple... Past: Jose Pele Jones... Coach Brandon "Truth" Vera cuz he's the first guy to break into UFC on our team. Master Lloyd Irvin, cause he's my instructor and he's the man. My new favorite fighter, is Ross Pearson, I've been training with him, he reps us, he bangs"

Jay Cee: "Ok, great. Thanks for taking some time out to speak with me Mike and I look forward to seeing you in action real soon!"

The End

I would like to again thank Mike Easton for talking to us and I am sure you guys (the readers) enjoyed the interview.

Nick Diaz files lawsuit against the Nevada State Athletic Commission

Earlier this week Nick Diaz’s lawyer Ross Goodman filed a lawsuit against the Nevada State Athletic Commission in response to a temporary suspension Diaz was given following his UFC 143 bout against Carlos Condit, Nick’s camp felt that the temporary suspension was unlawful and are unhappy with the delays and time it has taken for the NSAC to set a date for Diaz’s full hearing with the commission.

The lawsuit was filed for alleged violations of statutory law and his constitutional rights to due process. The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday, April 24th and was first reported by MMAFighting.com.

The temporary suspension came as a result of Nick failing a post-fight drug test which followed the Condit bout, he tested positive for marijuana metabolites which were found in his system as a result of the test.

With the combination of delays to the hearing, Ross Goodman is now asking for a full dismissal of the charges. As well as this Goodman also called on a Nevada legislative statute that says the commission would need to rule on the Diaz case within 45 days of the temporary suspension or Diaz and his team would consider the NSAC’s complaint null and void.

The retired welterweight UFC fighter has not made it clear if or when we may ever see him back in the octagon but it is clear that he and his team are not happy with the NSAC’s punishment.

Cain Velasquez will now face Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva at UFC 146

As a result of Alistair Overeem being withdrawn from the UFC 146 main event, Frank Mir will now step in to take on heavyweight champ Junior Dos Santos. With Mir becoming part of the headliner it left former champion Cain Velasquez (9-1) without an opponent, however, UFC president Dana White announced today via his Twitter account that Velasquez will now take on Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (16-3).

UFC 146 takes place May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The original main event between Alistair Overeem and Junior Dos Santos was scratched due to Overeem failing a pre-fight drug test which revealed elevated levels of testosterone. Overeem was then scheduled for a hearing with the NSAC to see if he would be eligible for a license to fight but UFC officials decided to remove Overeem from the bout instead of waiting.

Former Strikeforce fighter Silva was originally scheduled to face Roy “Big Country” Nelson on the same card but has moved into the new match-up which now leaves Nelson looking for an opponent. The UFC has not yet announced who Roy will be facing but he is still expected to compete on the card.

This will be Cain Velasquez’s first fight back in the Octagon since losing the heavyweight title to Junior Dos Santos at UFC on Fox 1 back in November 2011. Prior to his loss to Dos Santos, the first of his pro MMA career, the 29-year-old had picked up notable victories against fighters such as Cheick Kongo, Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brock Lesnar, who he defeated via TKO at UFC 121 to become heavyweight champion. A big win against Silva would send a message to the UFC and the whole division that he is still one of the top three contenders at heavyweight.

Strikeforce import Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva will enter the UFC Octagon for the first time on May 26th, he is no stranger to taking on top competition. With a record of 3-2 in Strikeforce he recorded victories over Andrei Arlovski, Mike Kyle and Fedor Emelianenko. In his most recent fight at “Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov” held in September 2011, Silva was defeated by Daniel Cormier via TKO in the first round. Defeating Velasquez would be a great way to bounce back from the loss and make an entrance into the world’s leading MMA promotion.

Fedor Emelianenko will face Pedro Rizzo in June at event in Russia

It has emerged that heavyweight MMA veteran Fedor Emelianenko (33-4) will face former UFC fighter Pedro “The Rock” Rizzo (19-9) in an event that is set to take place at the Ice Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 21st. The announcement for the match-up was made by M-1 official Evgeni Kogan via his Twitter page, currently there are no other fight or event details available at this time.

Fedor Emelianenko is currently on a two fight winning streak with victories over American Top Team fighter Jeff Monson, and most recently Satoshi Ishii who he defeated via TKO in the first round at an event held in Saitama, Japan in December 2011.

Prior to these two victories Fedor had been on a rough three fight losing streak whilst in the Strikeforce promotion where he was defeated by Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson. Since those losses, Fedor has left Strikeforce and now seems to be getting back into winning ways, this will be his first fight in 2012.

The Brazilian Pedro Rizzo is another veteran who has been fighting for well over a decade, he was once part of the UFC and challenged for the heavyweight championship on three occasions unfortunately losing each time. Since his last fight in the UFC back in 2003, Rizzo has been fighting for MMA promotions all over the world. He’s currently on a three fight winning streak having defeated the likes of Jeff Monson, Gary Goodridge, and most recently Ken Shamrock who he faced 2 years ago.

Replacement Roland Delorme steps in to take on Nick Denis at UFC on Fox 3

UFC officials have confirmed that bantamweight fighter Roland Delorme (7-1) will be stepping in to fight Nick Denis (11-2) at UFC on Fox 3. Denis was originally scheduled to fight Johnny Bedford (18-9-1) who has suffered an injury, the nature of the injury is not yet known.

In addition to this announcement the UFC has also confirmed the flyweight match-up between Tim Elliot and John Dodson which was previously covered on themmareview.co.uk

UFC on Fox 3 is scheduled to take place on May 5th at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J. The event will be headlined by Nate Diaz and Jim Miller who will go toe-to-toe in a lightweight brawl.

Nick Denis made his UFC debut in January of this year at UFC on FX 1 event. The 28-year-old earned “Knockout of the Night” honors with a first round TKO victory over Joseph Sandoval. Nick Denis has spent most of his MMA career fighting on the Canadian and Japanese circuits floating between both the featherweight and bantamweight divisions. Nick is currently 4-1 in his past five fights and will now look to build off his first UFC victory.

TUF 14 competitor Roland Delorme had his first official UFC fight at The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale in December 2011. The Canadian took on Josh Ferguson and ended the fight in the third round with a rear naked choke submission. Delorme’s only career loss was against Eric Wilson at CFC: Canadian Fighting Championship 6 which was held in October 2010. He now has the chance to pick up a second consecutive UFC victory and begin his climb up the bantamweight ladder.

Tim Elliott replaces Uyenoyama against Dodson at UFC on Fox 3

News has emerged that rising flyweight fighter Tim Elliott (8-2-1) has signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and will begin his journey in the big leagues with a bout against TUF 14 bantamweight winner John Dodson (12-5) at UFC on Fox 3.

The news of Elliott being signed was first announced by his team at Grindhouse MMA. This was followed by the addition of Elliott to the UFC.com flyweight roster list and the appearance of his name on the official UFC on Fox 3 fight card ,which is also viewable on UFC.com showing him matched-up against Dodson.

It has not yet been made clear why Darren Uyenoyama (7-3) will no longer fight at the event and no official announcement has been made by the UFC in relation to the change yet, but it is clear from the fight card that a switch has taken place.

The UFC on Fox 3 event will take place on May 5 at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, N.J., and will feature a headline fight between Nate Diaz and Jim Miller.

Former collegiate wrestler Tim Elliott has won his last eight fights in a row, showing the ability to finish fights by both knockout and submission. Elliott has most recently been fighting on the regional circuit for Resurrection Fighting Alliance where he has picked up notable victories over former UFC champion Jens Pulver and also Josh Rave.

Dodson was last in action at the TUF 14 Finale in December 2011 where he defeated T.J. Dillashaw via first round TKO, earned “knockout of the night” and became the 135 pound The Ultimate Fighter season 14 winner. Dodson is returning to flyweight where he will face Elliot on May 5.

D.J. Linderman is victorious in main event at Cage Warriors Fight Night 5

D.J. Linderman (11-3) defeated Bobby Brents (12-3) in the main event at Cage Warriors Fight Night 5. The heavyweight headline fight went to a decision with Linderman producing a dominant performance in the eyes of the judges.

The Cage Warriors Fight Night 5 event took place at the New Boxing Arena in Amman, Jordan. The preliminary matches were streamed on Facebook and the main card streamed on MMAjunkie.com.

Linderman was brought in as a last minute replacement for Chris Barnett who sustained a foot injury that left him unable to compete. Coming through to take up the vacant spot seems to have worked out great for Linderman who now looks likely to challenge the current Cage Warriors heavyweight champion Mike Hayes.

In the headline bout we saw D.J. win due to superior striking and foot work. Brent left the first round with a bloody nose as a result of Linderman’s stand up attack and although dominant in the clinch, Bobby was unable to match Linderman’s striking throughout the fight. Brents did manage to lock in a guillotine choke in the second round but was unable to end the fight with it. The third round was where we saw Linderman really pick Brents apart with his punches to secure yet another round. The judges awarded all three rounds to Linderman with the scorecards showing as 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.

The results for Cage Warriors Fight Night 5 are as follows:

Main Card:

- D.J. Linderman def. Bobby Brents via unanimous decision.
- Pavel Kusch def. John Phillips via submission (heel hook) – middleweight-tournament semifinal.
- Victor Cheng def. Faycal Hucin via unanimous decision – middleweight-tournament semifinal.
- Liam James def. Jean N’Doye via split decision.
- Mike Ling def. Eric Cebarec via TKO (elbows).
- James Brun def. Thomas Back via unanimous decision.

Preliminary Card:

- Kris Edwards def. Janne Elonen-Kulmala by unanimous decision.
- Mohamed Ali def. Doo Hwan Kim by unanimous decision.

Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos is refused a reduced suspension by the CSAC

On Monday Cris “Cyborg” Santos, along with her lawyer, attended a meeting with the California State Athletic Commission in Sacramento, Calif., in an effort to appeal a one year long suspension levied against her for the use of banned substances.

The CSAC voted to uphold the year-long suspension and fine which Santos had already paid previously. The suspension and fine were originally issued as the result of a failed post-fight drug test. Cyborg tested positive for stanozolol metabolites following her title defense in December 2011 against Hiroko Yamanaka at “Strikeforce: Melendez Vs. Masvidal.”

According to reports, Santos read a prepared statement to the commission:

“I made a mistake, I do not condone the use of performance enhancing drugs in MMA.”

Commissioner John Frierson showed appreciation for Cyborg’s admission and applauded the fact that Santos had come to the meeting and appeared before the commission. He said:

“At least she came before us and fell on the sword.”

In response to the admission by Santos commissioner Frierson introduced a motion to have the suspension reduced to six months, but the other commissioners did not agree and Cris Santos will still have to serve the full one year suspension.

Cyborg’s lawyer Bob Bartlett explained to the commission that the fighter had been given the substance by a coach to assist with weight loss prior to the fight. Unfortunately commissioner VanBuren Lemons felt that did not excuse the fact that a banned substance had been used and a motion to uphold the ruling was introduced. Lemons said:

“Intentionally or unintentionally, the opponent was put in undue danger at that match.”

Prior to this meeting with the commission Santos’ bout on December 17th was changed to a “no contest” by the CSAC and she was stripped of her Strikeforce title, her suspension ends in December 2012.

John Alessio will face Mark Bocek as a replacement for Matt Wiman at UFC 145

News has emerged that Matt Wiman will no longer be able to take on Mark Bocek at UFC 145 due to a knee injury.

A replacement has arrived in the form of John Alessio another MMA veteran who will fill the vacant spot and make his return to the UFC.

UFC 145 will take place on April 21 at Atlanta’s Philips Arena which was also the site for UFC 88 where Rashad Evans knocked out former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell in 2008. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans will challenge the current champion and former training partner Jon Jones in the main event.

Bocek was last seen in action at UFC 140 against Nick Lentz in December 2011. He was able to take Lentz down and dominant him on the ground to win via unanimous decision. Prior to that victory Bocek was defeated by current lightweight champion Benson Henderson at UFC 129 via decision.

Mark has won 6 out of his 10 fights within the UFC and even though he has a good rate of victories, he has had a problem defeating top level competition within the lightweight division. Mark has only lost 4 pro MMA fights in his career so far, the first against former champion Frankie Edgar, the second against Mac Danzig, the third against Jim Miller and lastly the bout against Benson Henderson.

32-year-old MMA veteran John Alessio will now make his return to the UFC, no doubt hoping to make a return with a big victory. The Canadian has won 10 of his last 11 fights with his only loss coming via TKO against Siyar Bahadurzada at United Glory 13 back in March 2011.

Currently riding a three fight winning streak John has nothing to lose, so expect to see a big performance from a man who is no stranger to the big show.

Megumi Fujii Vs. Jessica Aguilar announced for Bellator 69

One of the latest fight announcements for Bellator 69 is a women’s MMA match up between Megumi Fujii (25-1) and Jessica Aguilar (13-4). The Japanese fighter Fujii will make her return to the U.S. to fight for Bellator and take on Aguilar in a 115 pound battle.

The match-up was announced this week by Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney and is set to take place on May 18 at L’Auberge du Lac Casino Resort in Lake Charles, La.

Fujii enters this fight coming off a victory over Karla Benitez at a Dream event held in Saitama, Japan on Dec. 31, 2011. Fujii tapped Benitez out with an armbar just one minute and fifteen seconds into the first round.

Nineteen of Fujii’s 25 victories have come by way of submission. Her only ever pro MMA loss was against current Bellator women’s champ Zoila Gurgel at Bellator 34 in October 2010. Since then Fujii has built up a three fight winning streak.

Twenty-nine-year-old Aguilar comes into the fight having won her last four fights over Elsie Henri, Carla Esparza, Lisa Ellis-Ward, and most recently, Patricia Vidonic via unanimous decision.

Aguilar’s last appearance in Bellator was against Lisa Ellis-Ward in November 2011 where she also won by decision. Aguilar shares something with Fujii in the fact that her most recent loss was also to the current champ Zoila Gurgel in the Bellator season 3 women’s tournament.

Bellator 64 preview: Ben Askren Vs. Douglas Lima

Bellator 64 takes place this Friday, April 6, at Caesar’s Windsor in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and features current Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren (9-0) defending his title against Douglas Lima (21-4) in the main event.

Aside from the 170 pound title fight, the main card will feature two bantamweight quarterfinal matches and a featherweight semifinal match-up between Alexandre Bezerra (13-1) and Marlon Sandro (21-3).

Bellator 64 will air LIVE on MTV2 and in HD on EPIX on Friday, April 6, at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT. The preliminary card will stream LIVE on Spike.com at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.

The undefeated Askren last fought in October 2011 when he successfully defended his title via split decision against Jay Hieron at Bellator 56. Prior to that he successfully defended his title against Nick Thompson via unanimous decision at Bellator 40 in April 2011.

Since making his pro mixed martial arts debut in February 2009, Askren has racked up nine straight victories. His last six were in Bellator, and five of the six he won via decision.

Bellator season-five welterweight tournament winner Douglas Lima has also won his last nine fights in a row. But it was his clean sweep of the season five welterweight tournament that earned him a shot at Bellator gold.

Starting with a unanimous decision victory over Steve Carl in the quarterfinals last September at Bellator 49, Lima went on to score a second round knockout over Chris Lozano in the semifinals at Bellator 53 in October. Then to cap it off, he scored a second round knockout over UFC veteran Ben “Killa B” Saunders in the tournament finals at Bellator 57 in November.

Lima, 24, has a big experience advantage in straight MMA bouts, but the 27-year-old Askren’s experience on the wrestling mats compensate for a lot too.

Without a doubt the 2008 Olympian has the wrestling advantage over Lima, and most every other welterweight in the sport. Askren is also a BJJ brown belt. His best bet is going to be to take the fight to the ground and grind it out.

However, 11 of Lima’s 21 wins have come by way of submission, so even if Askren gets the fight to the ground, there’s no guarantee he is going to survive 25 minutes without Lima taking home a limb. But what choice does he have? With seven of Lima’s wins coming by knockout, Askren is not going to want to get into a striking game with the Brazilian.

The main card for Bellator 64 is as follows:

- Ben Askren vs. Douglas Lima (welterweight title fight)
- Alexandre Bezerra vs. Marlon Sandro (featherweight tourney semifinal)
- Travis Marx vs. Masakatsu Ueda (bantamweight tourney quarterfinal)
- Rodrigo Lima vs. Hiroshi Nakamura (bantamweight tourney quarterfinal)

It's that time again where we introduce you to The MMA Review "Babe Of The Month". I am happy to tell you that we have MMA ring girl Isobel Jackson as our April babe!

Check out our interview:

Jay Cee: "Hi Isobel, I am really happy to have you here on themmareview.co.uk as our April "Babe Of The Month"! Tell me how it feels to be an MMA Review Babe? and what were your thoughts when you first found out?"

Isobel: "Hi! It's such an honour to have been asked to be April's 'Babe of the month'! Thank you so much for having me :)"

Jay Cee: "No problem at all, I found out about you when speaking to my friend Emma over at Aphrodite Promotions. Tell me a bit about Aphrodite and what you and the girls get up to?"

Isobel: "I have been working for Aphrodite since December last year... I have mainly worked as a ring-girl at a few of the cage fights, it's so exciting...I love it!!"

Jay Cee: "What MMA shows have you worked at? and what is your favourite thing about being a ring-girl?"

Isobel: "I worked at an SFC (South Coast Fight Championships) fight show in Eastbourne and Contenders (UCMMA) in Brighton. I love the atmosphere at the shows, there's such a buzz!!! The best thing about being a ring-girl is being able to get that close to the fights and just being part of the whole thing!"

Jay Cee: "Are you an actual MMA fan? If so, who is your favorite MMA fighter? and why?"

Isobel: "I'm fairly new to the MMA scene but I have to admit it's a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine! I don't have a favorite fighter yet so there's still room for that in my life!"
Jay Cee: "Tell me a bit about what else you do outside of being a ring girl Isobel? I heard that you are currently training to be a Sports Therapist?"

Isobel: "Yes, that's right. I finish my training this summer, so who knows I might be working with some of the MMA fighters before long! Apart from that I love going out, I'm a bit of a party girl and just enjoy being with my friends."

Melvin Guillard Vs. Fabricio Camoes will take place at UFC 148

UFC officials have announced UFC lightweight fighters Melvin Guillard (29-10-2) and Fabricio Camoes (14-6-1) will square off at UFC 148 which is set to take place July 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The main event on the night will feature UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz against Team Alpha Male leader Urijah Faber. Both of these men are currently competing against each other as coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter: Live” on FX and will battle it out for the bantamweight gold at UFC 148.

Melvin Guillard has not had the best of luck recently having dropped two consecutive first round submission losses, first to Joe Lauzon last October, then against Jim Miller in January. The loss to Lauzon lasted all of 47 seconds.

Prior to this recent slump in performance Guillard had built up a five fight winning streak having defeated the likes of Ronys Torres, Waylon Lowe, Jeremy Stephens, Evan Dunham and Shane Roller.

Fabricio Camoes is on his second stint in the UFC. His first ever fight in the UFC ended in a draw against Caol Uno at UFC 106 back in November 2009. The fight ended in a draw after Comoes had a point deducted for an illegal up-kick to the head.

In his next fight at UFC 111 Camoes faced Kurt Pellegrino and lost via submission. This resulted in his release from the organization and a trip back to the drawing board. Following his release Camoes signed with Tachi Palace Fights and scored back-to-back wins in early 2011 against Steve Lopez and Efrain Escudero.

These solid victories earned him another shot in the UFC and in his return fight Fabricio defeated newcomer Tommy Hayden via rear-naked choke submission in the first round.

A victory against promotional veteran Guillard would be big for Camoes, but defeating the heavy-handed Blackzilian team member will not be an easy task for the 33-year-old BJJ black belt.
